Christmas.

Christmas as most should know was created as the celebration of the birth of Christ. The celebration has been around for some time, traced back as far as 354 AD. Over the years the celebration has morphed and many traditions have changed over the years, but many traditions still remain from what we eat to putting up trees and decorations, and many of the stories have lived on through television and songs that have been song for hundreds of years. Although Christmas has become very commercialized these days, there are those special moments in peoples lives that let the true spirit of Christmas shine through.

When I was a child many moments remain in my head of Christmas’s long past. My father as a child grew up poor and he never really liked Christmas as a child or an adult, I was never spoiled as a child at Christmas but never the less, each year me and my brothers and sister did receive gifts and some years more than other. When I met my wife in college she was of a strong Catholic background and I not of any religious upbringing at all, she shed a light on the true Christmas spirit. She taught me how to give, and the joy of giving something was much more then receiving. So I started giving to all those that had giving to me. A few years later we started a family. What a joy seeing the little tots waking Christmas morning with wide eyes and uncontrolled excitement of the gifts they had received. It wasn’t till about 2010 though that I found the true meaning of Christmas. It was Christmas Eve, it was about 5:30 PM and I was sitting in the church ( at this point I had been converted to Catholicism), and my daughter was singing in the choir, my in-laws were sitting with my wife, son, and me. I remember the exact moment, the church was so packed people had to stand, we were up in the balcony, the trumpets were sounding off and the choir boomed, and I remember thinking to myself if I died in that moment I had everything I had ever needed in life, everything came together as small as a point on the end of a needle, it was such a grand moment and that for me is the true meaning of Christmas.

So this holiday week, amongst all the hustle and bustle, the parties and shopping, gift giving and receiving, just remember one thing, remember to enjoy the moment. The moment of being with your family, your friends, your loved ones. Many of us will have a very different moment, it may be with your son or daughter, your girlfriend, with a special patient in the hospital, or with a next door neighbor, what ever it my be, just remember to capture that moment. Even the spirit of Christmas can be dampened, and the moments are not always there to capture, so remember to capture that one moment and remember it for those years where the light may shine dim, for next year the light may be shining bright.
